Born in Calgary, Alberta- Shanelle grew up on the south side of her beloved city until age 16 when she then ventured with her family to Kelowna, British Columbia. It was a life changing experience for her, teaching her humility, persistence and strength; ultimately, she holds those encounters dear to her heart because it made her who she is today.
After graduating high school, Shanelle knew she wanted to do something impactful on the world. Her talent? Computers. Staring at the University of British Columbia for Computer Science, she soon realized there was a creative outlet lacking- thus deciding to pursue Graphic and Digital Design at the Centre for Arts and Technology Graduating top in her class, she earned the Achievement of Excellence Award. Yet, after graduating and working in marketing for the year, she still felt something was missing- That's when she took a Psychology class with Dr. Jocelyn Wentland at UBCO and it finally clicked- mental health was her passion.
Shanelle is pursuing her Psychology major in hopes to join a clinical or counselling Master level program, potentially even chasing after her Ph.D. one day. She dreams of becoming a Marriage and Relationship Counsellor; helping people cultivate mentally stable environments that are conducive to building meaningful relationships in a generation filled with so much noise.
Currently she volunteers at Ok Clinical and as an undergraduate research assistant, allowing her to fall in love with the Psychology field everyday. To be able to learn strategies and how to nurture the underlying psyche has left her feeling very grateful to be in the position she is today. As Miss Universe Canada Finalist, Shanelle hopes to dedicate her time to supporting mental health causes in Canada.
